Conferences, seminars, guest lectures

In recent years, American Studies at Copenhagen has organized a number of international conferences, seminars, and research seminars, including the international, multidisciplinary conference Denmark and the Black Atlantic, May 2006, and the biennial conference of the Nordic Association for American Studies, May 2009.

Recent guest speakers have included Prof. Shelley Fisher Fishkin (2007), Prof. David Roediger (2008), Sir Christopher Ricks (2009), and the U.S. authors Junot Díaz, Rick Moody, and Emmy Perez (2008).

The Center for Transnational American Studies runs a series of research seminars in American studies each fall semester.

Recent and upcoming events

On 28 April 2010, Prof. Richard Pells (University of Texas, Austin) visited the Department of English, Germanic and Romance Studies at Copenhagen to run an American studies seminar for PhD students. Prof. Pells, a Fulbright professor at Copenhagen in the early 1980s, led a discussion of trends in American studies in the U.S. and Europe - the subject of a recent article by Prof. Pells in the Chronicle of Higher Education. Prof. Pells' seminar at Copenhagen is sponsored by the research program in Transnational and Migration Studies (TRAMS).

On Wednesday 26 May 2010 at 15-16.30 in the Ceremonial Hall (enter from Frue Plads) Deputy Secretary of State James B. Steinberg visits the University of Copenhagen to talk about U.S. foreign policy and debate with the audience. James B. Steinberg is the principal Deputy to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. read more

4th "Understanding the South, Understanding Modern America" conference
19-21 August 2010, the Center will host the fourth and final conference of the "Understanding the South, Understanding Modern America" research project. Previous conferences were held at the universities of Manchester (May 2008), Florida (January 2009), and Cambridge (May 2010). The theme of the Copenhagen conference is "Creating and Consuming the South."
